Toyota Mural

Winning Design

As part of the Conestoga College Graphic Design program, I had the priviledge of designing a mural for Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada. The mural that my partner and I designed was the selected piece to be printed and displayed in Toyota's factory. The following is our rationale for the project:

Positioned in the bottom right corner of the mural is the phrase “We Can, We Will” in strong block letters to excite and inspire new team members as they approach the elevator.

Above this phrase is a forest consisting of beautiful Japanese pine trees and Canadian Maple trees with both Mount Fuji and Niagara Falls visible in the background. The transition from left to right symbolizes Toyota’s growth and progress not only in Japan but also here in Canada. There are 10 tree clusters that abstractly represent the 10 core values of Toyota. Tucked in the trees are 7 icons representing the 7 functional areas of TMMC: Press, weld, materials, assembly, paint, plastics and quality control. This natural, euphoric scene is meant to enhance the workplace and inspire warmth, peacefulness and curiosity for the employees as they go about their day.

To showcase the beautiful craftsmanship and innovation of both Toyota and Lexus, we’ve included the Toyota Rav4, Lexus RX 350 and Lexus NX driving through the beautiful forest in an upward and progressive manner. All three vehicles are leading the industry as they boldly and confidently drive into the future.

The pattern in the background of the mural is made up of strong shapes that tessellate. The definition of tessellate is: “an arrangement of shapes closely fitted together, especially of polygons in a repeated pattern without gaps or overlapping.” This definition mirrors how Toyota values their employees; ensuring that there aren’t any gaps in training and that no employee gets overlooked or left behind. The shapes are a variety of colours and highlights the diversity in the employee demographic. This mural is a celebration of the companies progress while inspiring new employees and also honouring the legacy of those that came before them.
